Chapter 33: Trapped like rats

Artemis regarded the Summoner and his monsters as they hovered around the safe zone. She couldn’t influence the zone, but there was something else she could do. Something to guarantee that he paid for entering her dungeon.

The core was of course trying to fight back and was succeeding in limiting her manipulation, but she still had a few drops of power left. The dungeon would have to be abandoned as a source of power, but that was a small price to pay as she created a barrier of black energy at the stairs.

She savored the moment the group realized they were trapped. That stupid beastkin pounded her hammer against the barrier over and over as Artemis laughed and sent her monsters to surround the zone. The trees were climbed, and the bushes parted as her gnolls took their places. It was going to be one hell of a greeting as her Gnoll Champion began his preparations. The Summoner would need to clear the keep if he was going to get out. How joyous it was going to be when they realized that no other parties were going to be able to help them.

I watched as Min pounded on the barrier, but it was Zeus and Blue that started to draw my attention. Both of them were scanning the forest as if something was out there. Even my new wolf friend was growling as he approached the edge of the safe zone.

Something is wrong. Very wrong. What has the system done?

“Min!” I shouted, making her stop.

“We’re trapped,” she growled before marching over to me.

Tapping my ear, I pointed to the forest. The cat understood what I needed and she quickly noticed that the others were standing at attention, their hackles raised. It was only a few seconds later that Min started to growl as well.

“How many?” I asked.

“Too many.” Panning her gaze from left to right, she hissed in her cat like manner. “They are surrounding us as best they can. There’s scraping against the trees.”

Odd, I thought. They are giving themselves away. Why?

Sera walked over to Blue and the tiger. “I need you two to come with me.”

Blue nodded right away and vanished. The tiger took a second longer before joining Sera in vanishing and leaving the safe zone. Zeus summoned his tower shield and sword for the first time that day and gestured for the summons to spread out, protecting the edge of the safe zone.

The shifter stood next to Zeus as did the Iron Hide Wolf. Both of them added a bonus to the pack leader as I checked my mana.

Mana: 6/110

“Shit,” I muttered.

“What’s wrong?”

“I can only heal three times right now.” Shoving my fingers roughly through my hair, I cursed again. “I shouldn’t have pushed so hard to learn that spell.”

“We’ll need it in time,” Min stated. “Trust me.”

“Three will have to be enough.” Gazing deep into the forest, I thought I saw movement, but I had something else I needed to think about.
